Why We Choose Non-Toxic Skincare

Vol 12 Laura Roodhouse

A note from the founder

When we’re intentional about what we put into our bodies, it feels natural to extend that same consideration to what we place on our skin.

For me, this belief is deeply personal.

For many years, I lived with eczema, dermatitis, and psoriasis. Finding skincare that didn’t irritate, inflame, or trigger flare-ups was incredibly challenging. Even products marketed as “gentle” or “natural” often left my skin feeling reactive and compromised.

Through that lived experience, I came to understand how vulnerable the skin barrier can be — and how essential it is to use skincare that is truly compatible with sensitive, inflamed, and compromised skin.

From lived experience to corneotherapy

My personal experience with chronic skin conditions led me to study corneotherapy. Through this work, I learned to view the skin not as something to fix or control, but as a living organ that functions best when it’s supported.

Corneotherapy is grounded in one core principle: long-term skin health depends on barrier integrity. When the skin barrier is supported, the skin is better able to regulate hydration, reduce inflammation, and restore balance — which is particularly important for conditions such as eczema, dermatitis, and psoriasis.

This understanding reshaped how I approached skincare, and became the foundation of SIHA.

No two skins are the same

One of the most important lessons I’ve learned — both personally and professionally — is that no two skins are the same. What works for one person may not work for another, and skin needs can shift depending on health, stress, environment, and life stage.

This is why I’m deeply passionate about helping others understand their skin and choose skincare that is compatible with their individual skin barrier, rather than following trends or one-size-fits-all routines.

To support this, I offer personalised skin consultations, helping people with sensitive skin, eczema-prone skin, dermatitis, psoriasis, and other inflammatory conditions find products that are well tolerated and capable of delivering long-term results.

Why we choose non-toxic, barrier-supportive skincare

Natural, non-toxic skincare is formulated without artificial fragrance, hormone-disrupting ingredients, or unnecessary synthetic preservatives. This allows products to support the skin barrier rather than disrupt it — making them better tolerated across all skin types, including sensitive and compromised skin, and more considered in their impact on health and the environment.

From a corneotherapeutic perspective, skincare is most effective when it works with the skin’s natural structure and function, rather than overriding it. When formulations are compatible with the skin, results tend to be calmer, more resilient, and more sustainable over time.

Curated with care and intention

At SIHA, we curate non-toxic skincare made in Australia and New Zealand, selected for compatibility, efficacy, and long-term skin health. Every product is assessed through a barrier-first lens — not just for immediate results, but for how it supports the skin over time.

SIHA exists to make skincare feel safer, clearer, and more intentional — for myself, my family, and for anyone who has struggled to find products their skin can truly tolerate.
