Preparing Your Skin for Autumn

Vol 15 Laura Roodhouse

Supporting the Skin Barrier as Seasons Change

As the seasons begin to shift, the skin responds in subtle but important ways.

Changes in temperature, humidity and environmental exposure all influence how the skin functions. As cooler air arrives and humidity begins to drop, the skin barrier often works harder to maintain hydration and balance.

These environmental changes can increase trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL) — the natural process where water is lost through the skin barrier. While this process occurs continuously, drier conditions can accelerate moisture loss, placing greater demand on the skin’s protective structure.

From a corneotherapeutic perspective, autumn is an important moment to begin supporting the barrier before visible dryness or sensitivity appears. When the barrier remains strong, the skin is better able to regulate hydration, maintain comfort and adapt to seasonal change.

Understanding the Skin Barrier

The outermost layer of the skin, known as the stratum corneum, acts as both a protective shield and a regulator of moisture.

This layer is often described using the “brick and mortar” model. Skin cells form the bricks, while a complex mixture of lipids — including ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids — form the mortar that holds the structure together.

When this lipid matrix is healthy and intact, the skin is able to retain moisture, defend against environmental stress and maintain overall resilience.

Environmental changes can influence this balance. As humidity drops, the lipids that support barrier stability can gradually become depleted, allowing water to be lost from the skin more readily.

This may present as dryness, tightness, dullness or increased skin sensitivity.

Corneotherapy focuses on protecting and restoring this lipid structure so the skin can function as it was designed to.

Why Autumn Skincare Requires a Shift

Summer skincare routines often focus on calming inflammation and supporting the skin following increased sun exposure.

As autumn approaches, the focus begins to shift.

Rather than relying solely on lightweight hydration, the skin often benefits from formulations that help replenish barrier lipids and support moisture retention within the stratum corneum.

This does not necessarily mean dramatically changing an entire routine. Often, thoughtful adjustments — such as introducing lipid-supportive serums, oils or moisturisers — are enough to help maintain skin balance.

In corneotherapy, the goal is not to overwhelm the skin with active ingredients, but to support its natural structure so it can regulate hydration and protect itself effectively.

Supporting the Skin Barrier Through Autumn

As environmental conditions change, skincare can gradually evolve to provide deeper barrier support.

Barrier-supportive routines often include:

Humectants

Ingredients that attract and bind water within the skin, helping to maintain hydration levels within the stratum corneum.

Lipid-supportive formulations

Products containing barrier-compatible lipids that help reinforce the intercellular matrix and support overall barrier integrity.

Barrier-compatible oils

Plant oils rich in essential fatty acids can help reduce trans-epidermal water loss while supporting skin comfort and elasticity.

Daily mineral sun protection

Even outside of summer, UV exposure remains present year-round. UVA radiation in particular penetrates deeply into the skin and continues to contribute to collagen degradation and barrier stress.

Maintaining daily sun protection therefore remains an important part of preserving skin health.

A Preventative Approach to Seasonal Skin Health

One of the central principles of corneotherapy is prevention.

When the skin barrier remains intact, the skin is better able to regulate hydration, maintain resilience and respond calmly to environmental stress.

Seasonal transitions provide an opportunity to support the barrier before imbalance develops.

By gradually introducing barrier-supportive formulations and replenishing essential lipids, the skin can remain balanced, comfortable and resilient throughout the cooler months.

Often, the most effective seasonal adjustment is simply giving the barrier the support it needs before the skin begins to struggle.
